How to

The aim of this section is to introduce you to a number of compartment-flow modelling building blocks that you can incorporate into your own modelling. Most of these relate to the inclusion of exogenous variables — externally-varying factors such as temperature or rainfall — in your model.

The approach used here is to introduce each one using a simple, cut-down model whose only purpose is to illustrate the technique. This should help you to understand what is going on, since the dynamics of the model is not confused by other things happening at the same time. This approach is recommended whenever you want to try some new technique in your own modelling: otherwise, errors can be hidden and difficult to spot.
